CAWOOD, EUGENIA FREEMON Eugenia Freemon Cawood, age 89, of Waco died Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at a local nursing home. Services will be held at 10am Monday, June 9 at Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit with The Rev. John T. Wells officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation for the family and friends will be from 6-8pm Sunday, June 8 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Gene was born in Decatur, Illinois on August 9, 1913, the daughter of John and Nellie Crowder Freemon. She was married to James Wahl Cawood July 7, 1934. Gene was a graduate of the University of Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, May 22, 1969 and her daughter-in-law, Temple West Cawood, February 20, 1992. Gene valued education and dedicated her life to helping others achieve their goals. As a classroom teacher at Sul Ross Elementary, a special education teacher at Kirk-Wilson School, a speech therapist for the Waco ISD and a case worker at the Waco State Home, she touched the lives of many. Mrs. Cawood also served as the executive director of the Waco Camp Fire Girls; head mistress at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church School and after retirement, enjoyed working for the Robinson Water Department. Mocco, as she was known by her family and close friends, was an active member at Lakewood Christian Church and Delta Kappa Gamma, education fraternity. Survivors include son, John Cawood and wife Sue of Spring Hill, Florida, daughters, Christy Cumbie and husband Jim of Dallas, Cathy Capers and husband Clint of Waco and daughter of the heart, Ruby McKee of Sierra Vista, Arizona, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Mocco’s grandsons: Sam Cawood, Clay Cawood, Keith Cawood, Dennis Cumbie, Christopher Capers, and grandson-in-law, David Brannan. Honorary pallbearers are Randy Cumbie and Brian Capers. Memorials may be made to Camp Val Verde, c/o Camp Fire, Inc., 1826 Morrow Ave., Waco, TX 76707.
