Florentina A. Guerra, 91, passed into eternal rest May 19, 2020, at Regent Care Center. A private family service will be held Saturday, May 23, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home with Father Benjamin Magnaye officiating. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, to which all extended family and friends are welcome to attend. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday May 22, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Florentina was born at home on a small farm in Downsville, Texas, to Rodrigo and Margarita Alonzo on October 16, 1928. She attended Rosenthal schools, but her heart was always at home near her beloved mother, who she felt needed her. She was brought up with traditional values and learned the skills that women of her era did such as cooking, baking, and sewing. It didn’t matter what meal she cooked, it was always served with a dash of love and a smile. She had a green thumb and grew some of the most beautiful varieties of roses in various colors as well as a huge collection of indoor and outdoor plants. She had a nurturing and kind spirit and loved everyone. Florentina married her husband, Simon Guerra, at St. Francis Catholic Church on January 6, 1949. They had 4 children, Christine, Edward, Margaret, and Mary Helen. Florentina was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughters, Christine and Mary Helen; and sisters, Dolores, Antonia, Gregoria, Juanita, Natalia, and Claudia; and great-grandson, Justin. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Salinas; son, Edward Guerra; sister, Candelaria Mansolo; and 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Melanie Lerma, April Snyder, Marlena Flores, Candice Pena, Andrea Guerra, and Molly Sosa. Special thanks to the staff and nurses at Regent Care Center and Bluebonnet Hospice for the kind and compassionate care shown our mother and heartfelt thanks to Regent Care 100 Hall day nurse, Michelle, who provided invaluable love and support during mom’s final hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Susan G. Komen Foundation. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Mathew 11:28-30 The family invites you to leave a message or memory on our “Tribute Wall” at www.WHBfamily.com.
