Fred Robert Shavers, Jr. February 1, 1925 - April 24, 2006 Fred Robert Shavers, Jr., of Woodway died Monday, April 24, 2006 at his home. Graveside services will be at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, April 27 at the Oakes Cemetery in Fair Oakes, Texas, Limestone County, with the Rev. Su Milam of First United Methodist Church of Waco officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday, April 26 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Mr. Shavers was born February 1, 1925, in Waco, to Fred Robert Shavers, Sr. and Myrtle Mary Northcott Shavers. He attended Waco schools, and graduated from Waco High in 1942. He joined the Marines and served in WWII as a machinist in the South Pacific. He received many medals including a Purple Heart after being wounded in 1943. He married Opal Oakes on August 25, 1946 at Seventh & James Baptist Church in Waco. He worked as a highway patrolman and later as a safety engineer at Dow Chemical of Freeport, TX; Rocketdyne of McGregor, TX; and Thiokol Chemical of Marshall, TX. Forced into early retirement due to medical conditions, Fred found pleasure in his hobby of woodworking. Many people benefited from his creative gifts. Fred was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waco. He was a member of American Society of Safety Engineers and a member of Waco Lodge N. 92 A.F. & A.M. His parents, his wife, and a granddaughter preceded Fred in death. Survivors include his two sons; Fred Shavers, III and wife Diane of Woodway, Alvis Shavers and wife Donna of Scurry, TX; one sister, Dorothy Moore of McGregor, TX; six grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. The family would like to thank Tim Smith, Providence Hospice, Dalton Jaynes, and Word & Deed Sunday School Class for their loving kindness toward Fred over the last several months.
