GATELEY, GARDNER William Gardner Gateley, 73, Professor Emeritus at Baylor University, died Tuesday, May 06, 2003. Memorial services will be held at 11:30am Friday, May 9 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with Dr. Steven Mansen and Dr. Herbert Reynolds officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Thursday, May 8 in the garden room of the funeral home. Dr. Gateley was born September 7, 1929, in Cedar Grove, Tennessee to Lucian and Gladys Gardner Gateley. He completed his undergraduate studies at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, earned a master’s degree at the University of Tennessee and a doctorate at Ohio University. He was professor and chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Baylor University for over thirty years and served as president of the Texas Speech and Hearing Association. Dr. Gateley was a nationally recognized expert in the area of fluency disorders who was respected and admired by students and colleagues. He also was a lifetime member for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and Texas state association, as well as the recipient of several honors from professional organizations. He was an elder and longtime member of Central Christian Church. He was preceded in death by son, Rodney Lee Gateley. Survivors include wife, Margaret Gateley of Waco; son, Monty Gateley of Waco; grandsons, Marshall and Derrick; and sister, Patsy Adcock of Lexington, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gardner Gateley Scholarship Fund. Make checks payable to Texas Speech Hearing Foundation.
