JUMPER, GLENN E. Glenn E. Jumper, 76, of Waco passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at a local hospital after a long battle with emphysema. Services will be 9:30am Friday, April 30 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Bro. Van Vowell officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at China Spring Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 6 – 8 pm Thursday, April 29, in the funeral home Garden Room. Glenn was born May 7, 1927 to Cecil and Jewel Jumper. He lived in Waco all of his life and attended North Waco Elementary and North Jr. High. He was a Waco High Tiger and graduated in 1945. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 in Guam guarding Japanese prisoners of war. He started to work for the Waco Times-Herald on February 1, 1946 as an apprentice. He worked in the composing room and was a natural proofreader. He retired from the Waco Tribune Herald in June of 1989. Several letters to the editor that he wrote have been printed in the newspaper and he continued to proofread the newspaper from home. He married Iona Gates on January 27, 1990. He was a member of Grace Temple Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Boyd Jumper and a grandson. Glenn looked forward to the annual gathering of the Reuter Rats, a group of school chums from North Waco Elementary and North Jr. High. About 17 years ago he helped organize the group of former students, which started school in the 1930’s. He was the group’s dedicated and self appointed treasurer. His awareness of the whereabouts of many that lived in North Waco was amazing. He was loved and will be missed by the whole group. Survivors include his wife, Iona Jumper of Waco, daughter, Schelly Abel and husband, Michael of China Spring, grandchildren, Trent and Chesney Abel, brothers, Kenneth Jumper of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Arlen Jumper of Fort McCoy, Florida and several nieces and nephews.
