Harriette Leachman Lacy

August 18, 1915 — July 21, 2003

Harriette Leachman Lacy tenderly passed away into her Savior's Grace on Monday, July 21, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 23 at First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Austin Ave., Waco, Texas, with The Rev. Dr. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Interment and graveside services will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. A longtime Waco resident, Harriette Woodruff Leachman, was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Dallas to Florence Carter and Thomas George Leachman. The oldest of four children, she was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy Moehl of Des Moines, Iowa, and sister, Elizabeth Shannon of Dallas. Surviving sibling Tom G. Leachman Jr. resides in Dallas with his wife Lynda. Harriette Lacy graduated from Highland Park High School, Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and Southern Methodist University in Dallas. While at S.M.U. she began her lifelong affiliation and support of her sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. Upon her graduation, Harriette Leachman was employed by Titche Goettinger Co. as a sales clerk. She then had the good fortune of meeting and marrying Walter G. Lacy Jr. of Waco. They were married at her parents’ home in Greenway Parks, Dallas, by Dr. George Truett on Nov. 9, 1938, at a small family service. Upon returning from a honeymoon cruise from San Francisco to Honolulu on the U.S.S. Lurline, she moved to Waco and made it her home. Harriette Lacy and her husband were benefactors to many Waco activities including The McLennan County-United Way, The Baylor-Waco Foundation, Caritas, The Salvation Army, Reicher Catholic High School, Evangalia, Waco Symphony and Waco Cotton Palace. In 1982, the Harriette and Walter G. Lacy, Jr. Chair of Banking was endowed at the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University. She was also a charter member of the Baylor Alumni Association’s Torchbearer Society. In the midst of a very active life as a banker’s wife and mother of five children, it was obvious to all who knew her that her husband and children were her focus and priority in her life. After 49 years of marriage, upon the death of her husband in 1987, her sole priority became children and grandchildren. Also, preceding her in death were daughter, Florence Carter Lacy Goudeau and granddaughter, Elizabeth Claire Lacy. Harriette Lacy’s surviving children and their spouses are Martha Roane Lacy Howe and husband Don, Walter G. Lacy III and wife Gayle, Thomas Leachman Lacy and wife Lisa and William David Lacy and wife Nancy. Grandchildren are Donald Howe Jr., Lacy Howe Reike and husband Brian, Walter Lacy IV, Sarah Lacy, Thomas Lacy Jr., Melissa Lacy, Stephen Lacy and Carter Lacy. Also included as family is Sherman Steward and his wife Bertha. Pallbearers will be Thomas Lacy Jr., Walter Lacy IV, Donald Howe Jr., Lawrence Lacy Jr., Roane Lacy Jr., Heyward Taylor and Rhett Taylor. Honorary pallbearers shall include Sherman Steward, her wonderful doctors, caregivers who brought a quality of life to her final years and long time family friends.
