Harry Wood

Wood, Harry Harry A. Wood, Jr., passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at home with his family. Services will be Thursday, June 9 at 1:30 PM at Temple Rodef Sholom. Burial will follow at Temple Rodef Sholom Cemetery. Harry was born on July 4, 1923 to Harry and Minette Wood in Waco, Texas. He graduated from Waco Public Schools in 1939 and attended the University of Texas. He served honorably in the U. S. Army Air Corps until 1943. He spent 49 years in the insurance business with Berkman and Wood and as Vice President of Insurors of Texas. He was Past President of the Waco Association of Independent Insurance Agents. Harry was an active member at Temple Rodef Sholom where he served as President from 1960 to 1962. He spent 30 years involved with the UAHC, serving as a board member, President of the Southwest Region and Chairman of the National Commission Camp Institutes. He served as past President for the local B’Nai Brith Lodge and member of the Southwest Regional Board American Jewish Committee. Devoted to the United Way of Waco, he served as Budget Chairman, Past President, Director and former Trustee of the United Way Foundation. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. He married Maurene Levy of Marlin, Texas in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1987. He married Barbara Rips Hammer of San Antonio, Texas in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Hammer Wood; children, Harry A. Wood, III and Cindy of Waco, Sara Ann Wood of Dallas, Tracy and Jan Hammer of San Antonio, and Shelly Hammer of Dallas; grandchildren, Brandon and wife Erica of Scottsdale, AZ, Stanton and wife Mandi of Aledo, Adam of Dallas, Lauren of Waco, Sunni, Carli, Sean and Evan of San Antonio and great grandchildren, Stanton, Peyton, Savannah and Ashley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greene Family Camp, c/o Temple Rodef Sholom or the charity of your choice.
