Harvey L. Birkes

January 21, 1927 — November 20, 2003

BIRKES, HARVEY L. Harvey L. Birkes, age 76, of Waco died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at a hospital in Temple. Services will be held at 2:30pm Saturday, November 22 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Rev. Deryl LeBlanc and Rev. Brian Connally officiating. Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Mr. Birkes was born January 21, 1927 in Waco to James H. Birkes, Sr. and Mellie M. Fouts Birkes. He served in the U.S. Navy during W. W. II in Japan. He worked as a machinist and in the machine design business for many years. He had worked for various companies in the Waco area including J. M. Woods Manufacturing Co., Mosley Machinery, L. L. Sams and International Paper Co. He retired in 1989. Mr. Birkes was a member of V. F. W. Post #2148. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and five brothers. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, LaVerne Copeland Birkes of Waco, daughter, Sharon Kroskey and husband, Tony of Robinson, son, Tommy Birkes of Robinson, grandchildren, Jason Johnson, Jonathan Tate and Jennifer Arispe, seven great grandchildren, sisters, Alice Connally and husband, Kelly of Robinson, Mary Whiteside and husband, Calvin of Belton, and Jean De La Rosa of Waco, brothers, Ralph Harvey and wife, Judy and John Harvey and wife, Mary all of China Spring and numerous nieces and nephews and two favorite cousins, Mildred and Melba.
