Hazel Brown Cherry May 2, 1923-October 27, 2016 Hazel Brown Cherry passed away on October 27, 2016, at Providence Hospital, surrounded by her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 4, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey at 6101 Bosque Blvd., Waco, TX 76710. Family visitation will be 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, November 3, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Hazel Brown Cherry was born May 2, 1923, to Roy Green “Jim” Brown and Annie Mae Warren Brown in an area known as Lena Switch, in Fayette County, Texas. She graduated from Flatonia High School and moved to Austin and began work as a secretary. She married her high school sweetheart, Leonard Earl Cherry, in Muldoon, Texas, on January 17, 1942. Leonard and Hazel moved to Ft. Worth when he was stationed at Carswell Army Air Corps base during World War II, where she was a homemaker and mother to their only child, David Earl Cherry. During their time in Ft. Worth, Hazel was active in Garden Club, North Ft. Worth Baptist Church and as a hospital volunteer. After David left home for law school, she worked as a dental assistant. In 1980, after Leonard sold their business, they moved to Woodway, Texas, in order to be close to their only child and their grandchildren. Hazel and Leonard were members of First Woodway Baptist Church. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents and her two siblings, James Milton Brown, Sr., of LaGrange and Jewel Verline Brown Hughes Macklem of Waco. Hazel passed away approximately ten hours before Leonard and is survived by her only child, David Earl Cherry and wife, Katherine Ann Yarbrough Cherry, of Woodway; two grandchildren: Lisa Michelle Cherry Pittard and husband, Kirk Louis Pittard, of Grapevine and Craig David Cherry of Woodway; and four great-grandchildren, Wyatt Louis Pittard and Chloe Katherine Pittard of Grapevine and MacKenzie Elizabeth Cherry and Camille Lauren Cherry of Woodway. The family wishes to thank caregivers Stephanie Cole, Doris Barkley, Kimbra Talley and the staff at Visiting Angels for the care provided to Hazel and Leonard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Cherry-Yarbrough Scholarship Fund at Baylor University’s Truett Seminary, 1100 South 3rd St., Waco TX 76706, or to a charity of one’s choice.
