While there in shop he built a number of pieces of furniture from hardwoods that still remain in the family. He then returned to Cleburne where he owned and operated an auto repair shop until WWII was declared. He was unable to serve in the military due to a congenital hip displacement; so he felt the need to help in the war effort and went to work for a company in Chicago, Illinois and Cleveland, Ohio as a welder constructing large storage tanks for the government to be used by the military services. After the war ended he and his wife Ruth returned to Cleburne where he was employed as shop foreman for Central Texas Bus Lines. The company later moved the offices and shop to Waco. Some years later the company merged with Trailways Bus Lines and became Central Texas Trailways. Heard retired in 1996 after 50 years of service to the company.
