Helen Hurtado, 91, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, peacefully in her own home. Services will be on Monday, September 21, 2020, at St. Francis on The Brazos Catholic Church with a Rosary at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. All COVID-19 directives will be followed; facial covering and social distancing are required. Helen was born in San Antonio, TX, on June 26, 1929, to Fabian and Julia Duron. Helen was the oldest of eight children and was raised in Waco. She met her beloved, Ascension Hurtado, through their mutual church, St. Francis on The Brazos. They were married on August 16, 1953, in Waco. They continued as active members in the church, raising their family within the parish, eventually overseeing the St. Francis’s Social Ministry. Her passion was extending the healing ministry of Christ to everyone she met. As a member of the ministry, her duties included overseeing the food pantry, clothing drives, and utility assistance. She was also a member of the Guadalupanas as well as a Eucharistic Minister. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Fabian and Julia Duron; brothers, Richard, Joe; sister, Mary and husband, Ascension Hurtado. She is survived by her brothers, Antonio and wife, Mary, Alec, and Louis; daughter, Mary Elizabeth and husband, Rob; sons, Michael and Gilbert; grandchildren, Miguel and wife, Yuli, Kathryn, Marina, and John; great-grandchildren, Alejandro and Mateo. Pallbearers will be Johnny Ruiz, Patrick Duron, Kenneth Duron, Marty Hurtado, Tony Hurtado, Arthur Almanza. Honorary Pallbearers will be Miguel Hurtado and John Wilson In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for the various ministries at St. Francis on the Brazos Catholic Church, 315 Jefferson Ave., Waco, TX 76701.
