Hemprova G. McDonald February 24, 1918 - October 19, 2014 Dr. Hemprova Guha Ghosh McDonald, 96, of Waco passed away Sunday, October 19, 2014. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 25, at St. Catherine Chapel. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery, Hillsboro, Texas. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 24, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Hemprova was born February 24, 1918, in Habigunj, Assam, India, to Kusum Kamini Ray and Kunja Behari Guha. She grew up in Habigunj and Baniapara, India; and earned her Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1941 from Calcutta University Medical College, where she met her first husband, Dr. Nirendra Nath Ghosh, who died of leukemia in early 1950. After her graduation from medical college, she practiced internal medicine and was a research fellow in Immunology and Microbiology at the Indian Institute for Medical Research, Calcutta, from 1943-1950. She originally came to the United States in 1951 on a Danforth Foundation Fellowship and served as a cancer research fellow at Washington University School of Medicine, Division of Cancer Research, St. Louis, Missouri, from 1951-1952. To learn more about cancer pathology, she took pathology residency training at Washington University School of Medicine from 1951-1954 and later served as an instructor of Surgical Pathology in the same department until 1959. From 1959-1965, she served as Chief of Laboratory Service at the VA Hospital in McKinney, Texas, and as Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, where she met her husband, Dr. Hendley A. McDonald. They were married June 11, 1960, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Dallas. In 1965, she and her husband moved to Waco, where she practiced pathology, and founded and served as director of the Diagnostic and Cell Research Institute until 2007. She was also a member of the South Waco Clinic PA from 1985-2002. One of her main passions in life was the microscopic study of human and animal tissues. In this field she published thirty-three original scientific papers and wrote four books, "New Concepts in Blood Formation and Cell Generation in Malignant and Benign Tissues, Volumes I-IV." She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Waco. Hemprova was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Dr. Nirendra Nath Ghosh; three brothers, Sailesh Chandra Guha, Sudhir Chandra Guha, and Gopesh Chandra Guha, all of India; five sisters, Shanti Lata Bose, Malati Lata Ghosh, Nirupama Roy Choudhury, Anupama Bose, and Sushama Ghosh, all of India; and a brother-in-law, Judge Frank G. McDonald of Waco. She is also preceded in death by two sisters, Mana and Kalyani; and two brothers, Paresh and Ganesh, who all died in childhood. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Hendley A. McDonald; a sister-in-law, Louise McDonald of Waco; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Dalbert Thiele, William Palasota, Kirk Raney, Bernard Machovsky, Sudip and Joydeep Ghosh. The family wants to thank long time caregivers, Helen Green, Mary Cooper and Bernard Machovsky and the staff at St. Catherine Center for their care and concern for Mrs. McDonald.
