He grew up in Moody and graduated from Moody High School in 1953. He attended Baylor University, where he graduated in 1957 with a major in economics. He began his career as an insurance adjuster with Farm Bureau. While employed by them in Canyon, Texas, he attended night school and earned a Master's Degree in Psychology. In order to be close to his and his wife's families, Bud left Farm Bureau to work for Indiana Lumbermen's Mutual Insurance Company in Waco, Texas. He remained there throughout his career, while he earned a law degree, as well as an Associate in Claims AIC, from the Insurance Institute of America. Bud eventually became a state manager for claims for three different insurance companies. He retired early and formed Bud Jones Inc., in which he managed lawsuits for several insurance companies until his second retirement. Bud was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Woodway, where he served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, and trustee. He served on two different pastor search committees, leading to Dr. Morris Chapman and Dr. Michael Toby. He also served on the Resolution Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention and as a trustee for Lifeway Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. He served on the Advisory Board for the Southwestern Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters, as Chairman of the Board for Naler Cemetery Association, and for six years for the Texas National Guard. Bud's hobbies included camping trips with his children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, back packing and climbing mountains in Colorado, as well as working and playing on his ranch in Coryell County, which he continued to do throughout his life. He married Annette Morris in 1959 and has often said, "Aside from trusting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, marrying Annette Morris was the smartest thing I ever did." He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Aura Bell Jones of Moody, Texas; and his daughter, Angela Ruth Angie Jones. He was survived by his wife, Annette Jones; his daughters and their husbands, Julie and Wes Cash of Waco, and Anne and David Ryon of Bedford, Texas; his sister, Eva Jo Dobie Butler of Nolanville, Texas; and his four grandchildren, Andy and Ben Cash of Waco, Caleb Ryon of Cairo, Egypt, and Audrey Ryon of Bedford; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
