Herbert L. Cherry November 25, 1919 September 5, 2012 Herbert L. "Buddy" Cherry, 92, passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at Providence Hospital. A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 8, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with the Dr. Matthew Snowden officiating. Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 7, at Malakoff Cemetery. Mr. Cherry was born to George and Cora Mae Cherry on November 25, 1919, in Lone Prairie, Texas/ Navarro County. He grew up on the family farm and attended Malakoff schools. Herbert married Kitty Erlene Smith on May 26, 1939. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked for Royal Chevrolet, in Malakoff, as service manager. In 1963, Herbert was selected as the first president of the Chevrolet Only the Best Club. In 1965, he and his family moved to Waco where he worked for Steakley Chevrolet and later, Woody Jackson Chevrolet in McGregor. He was a member of North Waco Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Waco, having served both churches as a deacon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church committee for the formation of Baylor's Truett Seminary, and was awarded the Baylor Alumni by Choice in 2000. Mr. Cherry is survived by his wife, of 73 years, Erlene; his children, Rita and James Bowden of Cranfills Gap, Kitty and Michael Laughlin of Temple, Melissa Downey of Ft. Worth; grandchildren, Angela and Greg Gloff, Scott and Cami Grissom, Alan and Dana Bowden, Michelle and Stuart Masters, Amy and Lee Strickhouser, Buddy Downey, Josh Downey; and 13 great grandchildren.
