Hilary Joseph Deering

July 19, 1919 — January 21, 2005

The Rev. Hilary Joseph Deering was born July 9, 1919, the seventh of ten children to Patrick and Mary Deering. He was born on a farm outside of Rathvilly, County Carlow, Ireland. He received his early education in the local public school. At the age of 12, Hilary transferred to the Patrician Brothers School in Tullow, County Carlow, which was five miles from the family farm. He was 16 years of age when he left the family farm and joined the Patrician Brothers Boarding School at Mount Wolsey. In 1938, he made his religious vows with the Patrician Brothers. Upon graduation from Mount Wolsey, Rev. Deering attended University College, Galway, graduating with a degree in Math and Science. Rev. Deering taught in the Patrician Brothers School in Galway City and their College in Ballyfin. In 1948, Rev. Deering was invited to teach in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He became principal of the Boys High School in Santa Monica. He received his Master’s Degree from UCLA and taught at Mount St. Mary’s College. Several years later, he became Principal of Pater Noster High School on San Fernando Road. The Rev. Hilary Deering was a man of vision; education was the gateway to success. He spent his life working for the success of others. The Rev. Hilary Joseph Deering is survived by three brothers: Monsignor Mark Deering, Waco, Texas; L. P. Deering, Baltimore, Maryland; Mayor Michael Deering, Carlow, Ireland, and several nieces and nephews in England and Ireland. The Rev. Deering’s funeral service will be at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at 10:00am on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Los Angeles, California. WILKIRSON-HATCH-BAILEY
