MR. HOMER J. SPEGAL April 20, 1931 September 4, 2008 Homer J. Spegal, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Sept. 4, 2008, in a local hospital. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 8, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with the Rev. Walton Strickland officiating. Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.Sunday, September 7, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. A lifetime resident of Waco, Mr. Spegal, 77, was born on April 20, 1931, to C.G. and Agnes Spegal. He married Murl D. Rankin on May 6, 1961. They were married for 34 years until her death on July 3, 1995. Mr. Spegal was a longtime businessman in the Waco area. Early in his career, he worked as an assistant manager at Piggly Wiggly grocery store, and he later owned a local service station where he enjoyed spending quality time with his daughters who provided assistance in his shop. He retired from K. D. Manufacturing. Following a brief time of retirement, Mr. Spegal decided he wanted to continue to use his skills to serve his community, so he joined the maintenance staff at Regis St. Elizabeth Retirement Center where he worked until his second retirement. Mr. Spegal always placed his family first, making sure that he supported school and extracurricular activities of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking in his shop, talking on CB radios and taking bus tours to Branson, Mo., and Shreveport, La. For several decades, he looked forward to Friday night racing events at Heart of Texas Speedway, where he occupied the same seat every week in the stands and enjoyed watching his son-in-law, Russ, and grandson, Trevor, race. Mr. Spegal was a member of Chalk Bluff Baptist Church and the American Legion. He is survived by his family, Susie Herrera and Roy Garcia of Waco, and Debbie and Russ Reed of Chalk Bluff; four grandchildren, Nora and Nikolas Herrera, and Trevor and Reagan Reed; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a granddaughter, Monica Herrera. Pallbearers will be family friends Joe Beard, Steven Carter, Chad Fillip, Ray Guest, Lee Richards, Johnny Salas, Rickey Schaeffer and Jeff Sexton.
