Hugh Raymond Turner December 19, 1919 February 2, 2008 Hugh Raymond Turner passed away Saturday, February 2, 2008 in a local hospital. Services will be at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 5 at the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation with the family will be held from 6 -7 pm, Monday, February 4 at the funeral home. Mr. Turner was born December 19, 1919 in Roby, TX to Hugh Richard Turner and Mattie Lee Wilson Turner. The Turner family moved to Waco when he as a young child, he grew up and spent most of his life in Waco. He enlisted in the Army on October 22, 1940 and served in North Africa, Italy, France, Central Europe and Germany. He was a sergeant in Company C, 179th Infantry, and 45th Division. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat along with the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with 5 Bronze Star on a Bronze Arrowhead. Honorably discharged on July 27, 1945. He married Velma Jewell Parker Carter in Belton, TX on March 26, 1948. They resided in Waco their entire married life and were members of Beverly Hill Baptist Church. He retired from the Waco Veterans Hospital in June 1977 where he worked in the Occupational Therapy Department for over 30 years. Mr. Turner was a member and past vice-president of the Waco Gem and Mineral Club. He received his pilot's license and enjoyed flying all around Texas. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his wife; sisters, Beatrice Kilgore, Edith Sexton and Amie Lee Trice and brother, Virgil Turner. He is survived by his daughter, Pat Moody and husband, Edgar of Marlin; son, R. Russell Turner and wife, Gail of Houston; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and brother, Wesley J. Turner of Moody. The family request memorials be made to the Falls Community Hospital, 322 Coleman, Marlin, Texas 76661 or First Baptist Church of Marlin.
