Ida Lucille Smith

January 20, 1924 — August 25, 2021

After a long and happy life, Ida Lu Smith passed from this life on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2021 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Aaron Zimmerman officiating. Ide was born on January 20, 1924, in Dallas, Texas to Maurice and Ernestine Spurgin. She grew up in San Bernardino, California and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University. It was there she met Goodhue Smith, her husband of almost 70 years. After living in Boston while Goodhue finished his MBA at Harvard, the young couple moved to Waco. Together they raised four children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ide was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend to many, and was a committed community volunteer. Her volunteer activities reflect the broad range of her interests: a founder of Vanguard College Preparatory School, a member of the Junior League and the Charity Ball chairman, a delegate to a national Republican Convention, president of Oakwood Cemetery, Chair of the Woman’s Division of the United Way and many more. Ide will be remembered for her kindness, her wisdom, her love of travel, and her competitive spirit--especially at the Mah Jongg table. Ide was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and grandson, Kyle Quebe. Left behind with loving memories are Ellie and Eddie Morrison, Goodhue and Jacque Smith, Deborah and Karl Quebe, Hilliard Smith and Mike Watkins; grandchildren, Mary and Robbie Bennett, Kalli and Mark Drosos, Evan and Mandy Morrison, Katita and Chase Palamar, Kaitlin Quebe; and eight great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers that enhanced the life she lived: Texas Home Health, Nellie Gunn, Juan and Isabella Martinez, Nikki Lothlen, Charlotte Burris, Laura Torres, Tina Houseman, Monica Kiss, Marianna Marton and most especially Sam and Sofia Marton. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the St. Alban’s organ fund (305 N 30Th St, Waco, TX. 76710) or Vanguard College Preparatory School (2517 Mt. Carmel, Waco, TX 76710) or a charity of your choice. The family invites you to share a memory or message on our “Tribute Wall” at www.WHBfamily.com.
