James C. Dalton

James C. Dalton (Jim), age 90, went home to be with his Savior Monday, January 1, 2024.


A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, January 19, at First Presbyterian Church of Waco, with Reverend Dr. Leslie King officiating. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation with the family at 2:00 p.m. in the church parlor.


Jim was born June 14, 1933, in Granger, Texas to Hollis and Nora Adams (Skipper) Dalton. Jim grew up in Waco where he attended and graduated from Waco High School in 1950.


After a short career as a US Marine, Jim attended Baylor University and the Baylor School of Physical Therapy. While at Baylor, Jim met his first wife, Anna (Allen) Miller. They were married in 1958 and had two sons, Daniel and Steven.

Jim served as a licensed Physical Therapist and also Executive Director at the McLennan County Rehabilitation Hospital until going into private practice with the Bone and Joint Clinic, and later a stand-alone practice.


In January 1985, Jim married Carey Sturgis and they were happily married until Carey’s death in 2016. Jim retired at age 65 and he and Carey enjoyed their retirement years traveling, spending time with family, and their large circle of dear friends. He was a devoted Baylor sports fan, most especially his beloved Lady Bears and was a long-time season ticket holder. Jim served in many organizations; as president of the Waco Hedonia Club, Arthritis Foundation, and Waco Historic Foundation, as well as Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian Church.


Jim is predeceased by his parents, Hollis and Nora Dalton; his wife, Carey Dalton; and sister Peggy Davidson.


He is survived by his children, Dan Dalton and wife Brandi, Steve Dalton and wife Staci, Laura Sturgis Patterson and husband Joel, Trey Sturgis and wife Gaby, and Fran Sturgis Calderon and husband Joe; his nephew, Ken Davidson and wife Jimmi; and his niece, Sherre Davidson. Jim was blessed with 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.


In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital and the First Presbyterian Church of Waco at 1100 Austin Avenue.
