James J.D. Daughtry Martin, III December 26, 1925 - May 7, 2006 James J.D. Daughtry Martin, III of China Spring passed away Sunday, May 7, 2006 at his residence. Services will be at 11:30 am Thursday, May 11, 2006 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Bosque Chapel. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m.Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Garden Room. J. D. was born December 26, 1925 in Ft. Worth, TX to James Daughtry Martin, Jr. and Rosa Lee Thomas Martin. After WWII erupted, J.D. joined the Navy in October, 1942. While in the Navy, he served both in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters. In the Pacific, J.D. saw combat at Tarawa, and again in the Battle for the Marshall Islands. While in the Atlantic, J.D. was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Mission Bay. As a result of his devoted service, by the age of 19, J.D. had been awarded five battle stars. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in October of 1945. Shortly after the completion of his service in the Navy, J.D. met the love of his life, Dorothy Allcock. They were married on June 16, 1946. Together they had two children, Adren Lee Martin and Jancie Rose Martin. Early in his marriage, J.D. worked for the V.A. hospital in Ft. Worth. He then began a career in the roofing industry. After many years of hard work, he was able to start his own roofing company. This led to the founding of Brazos Roofing in March of 1974 which continues to operate today. Brazos Roofing has done work from the Marshall Islands, to Guam, to Brazil and all over the United states. J.D. spent many joyous years working at Brazos Roofing along side his son Adren, until his death. J.D. continued to work every day until his recent health decline. J.D. had a great love of animals. He adopted many a stray during his lifetime. His home and surrounding land is filled with many animals, both domestic and exotic. He also had a passion for deep sea fishing, and participated in a tag and release program for large game fish. Other loves included shopping, traveling, picking on the guitar and visiting with friends. J.D.’s last days were spent with his family and special friends Bill and Sheryl Nevers. Many an hour was spent at the kitchen table playing the card game Skip-Bo. J.D. was preceded in death by his son Adren on April 22, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Dorothy Martin of China Spring; daughter Jancie Martin Smith and husband Steve of China Spring; daughter Sharon Jane Brown and husband Mike of Laclede, MO; grandsons, Austin and Dillon Smith of China Spring; grandson, Travis Smith of College Station; grandson Tyler Martin and wife Stef of China Spring; grandson Max Martin and wife of Del Rio; grandson Lee Martin of Woodway; grandson Troy Brown stationed in Iraq; granddaughter Tracy Morgan and husband Loren of Liberty, MO; granddaughter Misty McBee and husband Jake of Canton, MO; 14 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; sister Mary Lee Necessary of Big Cabin, OK; brother John Beaty and wife Carrie of Ft. Worth; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Travis Smith, Austin Smith, Dillon Smith, Bill Nevers, Ron Haddock, Tommy McAdams, Roberto Picazo and Jesus Salcedo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Hospice, Fuzzy Friends Rescue Center or a favorite charity.
