Jewell L. Wood August 24, 1924 - October 3, 2014 Jewell Louise Dison Wood of Waco, Texas, passed away Friday, October 3, 2014. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 10, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 9, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Jewell was born August 24, 1924, in Lott, Texas, to Thomas Vernon and Ila Hope Dison. Jewell's ancestors, the Hope, Dison, Starkey and Gunn families, immigrated to Texas in the late 1800s. Her father was killed in an oil field accident when she was a young child. Her mother later married James Edward Stites. Jewell's step-father's work moved the family to several states, before Jewell returned to Waco to care for her grandfather while she attended and graduated from Waco High School. For a short time, Jewell was employed by Pipkin Drug Store before becoming an employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She retired after 43 years of employment in the business office. Jewell loved her travels. She made four trips to Europe, a trip to Hawaii, a trip to Canada and a trip to Alaska. Jewell had many friends and organized a monthly luncheon for former co-workers from the telephone company. This group continued to meet for many years. She was active in many organizations: Communication Workers of America, Waco Telco Credit Union as a board member, president of the Waco Chapter of Brazos Valley of the American Business Women's Association, Telephone Pioneers of America, the Red Hat Society, the African Violet Club and the Orchid Club. Jewell's hobbies were gardening, traveling and her dogs. She is survived by her nephew, Stephen Miller and wife, Sue, of Midlothian, Texas; a sister, Ila Davies of Dallas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials may be made to Fuzzy Friends.
