Dr. Joe Martin Long September 15, 1918 - September 16, 2006 Joe Martin Long, Ph.D., 88, of Waco passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2006 after a brief illness at Royal Manor Nursing Home in Hewitt. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 20, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Bosque Chapel with Rev. David Shuttlesworth officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North Cemetery. Dr. Long will lie in state at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey beginning Tuesday, September 19. Dr. Long was born September 15, 1918 in Porterville, Mississippi to William Tildon Long and Ivah Ford Long. After serving his country in World War II in the Army Air Force, he began his 59-year career in the field of Social Work. He was an active member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church since moving his family to Waco in 1969. He was also associated with the Baylor School of Social Work and was a field instructor of the Undergraduate Social Work program since its inception. In his spare time, Dr. Long was an avid gardener and, in later years, he took great pleasure in quilting. Dr. Long is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Marguerite VanDevender Long, and by two sisters and four brothers. He is survived by his sister, Iva Mae Workman of Clinton, South Carolina and by his children, Kenn Long and companion, Casey Cannon, of Los Angeles, California; Gregg Long and wife, Elaine Peterson Long of Houston, Texas; and Kaye Howard and fiancé Michael Cuff of Georgetown, Texas. Survivors also include grandchildren, Don Anthony Howard and companion Douglas Williams of Yoakum, Texas; Michael Jayson Howard and wife, Becky Mae Howard of Georgetown, Texas and Eric Nathaniel Long of Conroe, Texas, as well as great-grandson Ethan Jayson Howard.
