Joe Owen

OWEN, JOE Joe Owen, age 76 of Waco died Friday, January 10, 2003 at his residence. Memorial services will be held at 1:30p.m. Monday, January 13 at First Presbyterian Church of Waco with the Rev. Dr. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Arrangements are through Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Mr. Owen was born May 1, 1926 to Charlie and Achsa Mae Owen in Upshur County near Tidwell Mountain. He graduated from high school in 1944 and was named to Look magazine’s All American Track Team. He was awarded a track and football scholarship to attend Texas A&M. However, in July 1944 he entered the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific Theater. After discharge, he attended Baylor with a track scholarship. Mr. Owen married Jo Ann Mason May 26, 1950. They were married over 50 years. Joe was a business man for Mason and Co. and Moody Cotton Co. for over 50 years. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a wonderful little league coach for five years. Joe was a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church in his younger years. He served as a Sunday evening youth sponsor at Westminister Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, brother and infant daughter. Survivors include: daughters, Lu Ann Madden and husband Craig of Mart, Judi Brannon and husband Jay of Austin; son, Rick Owen and wife Lori of Houston; grandchildren, Andrea Mason and Stephen Davis Owen of Houston; sisters, Charlene Smith of Dallas, Daphene Arrington of Gilmer, Cookie Holcomb of Gladewater and Carolyn Wood of Gilmer, and brother, Sam Owen of Dallas.
