John B. Sherrell

SHERRELL, JOHN B. John B. Sherrell, age 82, of Waco passed away Monday, April 12, 2004 at his residence after a short illness with cancer. Graveside services will be held at 11am Wednesday, April 14 at Rosemound Cemetery with Rev. Michael O. Patterson officiating. John B. was born July 15, 1921 in Waco to Annie to John B. Sherrell, Sr. He grew up in Waco and as a young boy he enjoyed fishing, swimming and baseball and attended Waco public schools. At an early age, he worked for Cooper Grocery Co. and Rainbow Bakery as a route delivery driver. On August 17, 1941, he married Virginia Cummings and they were married 62 ½ years. To them was born one child, John Charles, on October 13, 1942. In November 1942, he joined the Air Force, and for 18 months was at Blackland in Waco and 18 months at Randolph Field in San Antonio. In February 1947, he went to work for Waco Police Department, retiring after 43 years. He was a patrolman, sergeant in the detectives department, polygraph examiner, and in the criminal investigations department. John loved his family and always provided for them. He also liked dancing and especially playing the harmonica and working crossword puzzles. He was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church and Old Timers Police Association. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and one sister. He is survived by his wife and son. He will be missed by many.
