John Bunyan Davidson

DAVIDSON, JOHN B. Dr. John B. Davidson, Craig Professor Emeritus of Religion at Baylor University, passed away Friday, October 17, 2003 at his home in Belton. Memorial services will be 2pm Monday, October 20 at 7th & James Baptist Church with the Dr. Raymond Bailey officiating. Visitation will be 3-5pm, Sunday, October 19 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque Blvd. John was born on June 16, 1915 in Seagonville, Texas to Minnie and B.J. Davidson. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from the University of North Texas. He completed his graduate degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Texas. John was a Teaching Fellow at the University of Texas where he received his Ph.D. As a Baptist minister, John was a pastor in Greenville, Fort Worth, Montague, and at Congress Avenue Baptist Church in Austin. He became the Minister of Pastoral Services at the First Baptist Church, Austin before joining the Department of Religion at Baylor University in 1957. He retired from Baylor in 1985. John married Jessie Margaret Miller on September 8, 1938. They recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. A remarkable man, John, will always be remembered as a highly respected scholar and gentleman who lived an honorable and noble life. John’s former students from around the world will also remember him for his teachings of the New Testament, counseling, and psychology of religion. He always exemplified the best qualities of professionalism, kindness, honesty, sensitivity, caring, generosity, and leadership. His counsel and inspiration to many, strength, courage, devotion and dedication to his family, and his keen sense of humor are everlasting. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; daughters, Donna Cunningham and husband Mike of Argyle and Suzy Lackmeyer and husband Mike of Belton. John is also survived by his grandchildren Lisa Cunningham of Fort Worth; Cristin Thomas and husband Stephen of Baton Rouge, LA; Jeff Lackmeyer and wife Shannon of Hewitt; John Lackmeyer of Stephenville; Jay Lackmeyer and wife Whitney of Salado; Bonny Lackmeyer of Belton; two great-grandchildren, Trent Michael Thomas and Jenna Michele Lackmeyer; brother, Roland Davidson of Cedar Hill; sister-in-law, Lorene Davidson of Waco; and several nieces and nephews.
