John Leonard Hopkins

HOPKINS, JOHN L. John L. Hopkins, age 79 of Waco died Thursday, January 9, 2003 at a local nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 13 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd with the Minister Jim Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Visitation with the family will be from 3-5pm Sunday, January 12 at the funeral home Garden Room. Mr. Hopkins was born October 25, 1923 in Teague to Jobe and Vera Hopkins. He served two years in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He married Oleta Noble November 4, 1944. They lived in Dallas where he started a career in the insurance business with Reliable Life Insurance Co. They moved to Waco in 1961. He became an Independent Agent and owned Hopkins’ Insurance Agency and retired in 1994 after 47 years in the insurance business. Mr. Hopkins was a member of Crestview Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Oleta Hopkins of Waco; daughters, Sandy Shockey and husband Ken of Lorena, Gloria McDonald of Waco; son, Gary Hopkins and wife Molly of West; grandchildren, Cherie Shockey, Glenn Shockey and wife Michelle, Heather McNair and husband Rock, Holli, Katie and Ashley Hopkins, Kyle Binner and wife Jamee, Ashley and Seth Binner; great grandchildren, Garrett and Brandt Shockey, and Morgan Binner; brother, Richard Hopkins and wife Lila Belle of Montezuma, North Carolina. Pallbearers will be Dwight Alexander, Jimmy Noble, Danny Noble, Rock McNair, Kory Morgan, and Ronnie Adley. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association.
