Joseph Henry “Joe” Calley October 1, 1933 - August 23, 2006 Joseph Henry “Joe” Calley of Waco, TX died Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at Wesley Woods Alzheimer facility. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, October 1 from 2 to 4:00 pm at Barron’s on 5th street, 1705 North 5th, Waco, TX. Bring your best “Joe” story and come casual. Everyone is welcome! Joe was born in Pittsburgh, PA, October 1, 1933 to Harry W. Calley and Bertha Calley who both preceded him in death. Joe grew up in Turtle Creek, PA in the center of “blue collar” America. His high school academic and athletic abilities allowed him to be the first in his family to go and graduate from college. Joe attended Indiana State Teachers College of Indiana, PA to become a teacher. He graduated in 1955 with a B.F.A. while on the soccer and swim teams. He was also a member/officer of Delta Gamma Tau. In 1955, he married Annabel Joyce Switzer Calley, the “sunshine lady” and they were married for 27 years with three children, Catherine Lynn, “Cass” Calley of Pegosa Springs, CO, J. Scott Calley of Woodway, TX and Craig Calley of Wimberley, TX. Joe had an exciting and varied life that allowed him to travel all over the world. An excellent Art teacher and coach in PA, in golf, track and football from 1955 to 1965. He taught graduate sculpting courses at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA where he received an M.F.A. in sculpting. He also held the prestigious position of President of the Pittsburgh Associated Artists and many of his works of art and larger sculptures are still on exhibit in the Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. areas. In 1966, he was appointed by Gov. Milton Schapp as the Director of Art Education for the Pennsylvania Public School Systems, responsible for designing all Art curriculums statewide. He also wrote grants for federal funding. In 1971, the family moved to Waco, TX where Joe was working as a consultant for the new Education Division of Success Motivation Institute. From 1978 to 1984, he was a private consultant, public speaker and instructor for many NYSE companies for management training. He also taught continuing education at McLennan Community College before working as Director of Training with the Texas Farm Bureau from 1985 to 1995. Sandra Rutherford was married to Joe for three years ending in 1993. He then retired to the life of an Artist, Jazz Musician and Sports Enthusiast. He is survived by all his children; grandchildren, Cliff Calley and Chelsea Calley both of Austin, TX; daughters-in-law, Cheryl Stone Calley and Paula Guthrie and brother, Harry W. Calley, Jr. of Gaithersburg, MD and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Wesley Woods Alzheimer, Waco Art Center or the charity of your choice.
