Josephine Smajstrla Maddox, 91, died on November 24, 2005, at Sugar Land Oaks in Sugar Land, TX where she had lived for the past 10 years. A Funeral Mass in celebration of Jo’s life will be held at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, November 30 at St. Louis Catholic Church with Father Patrick Ebner as celebrant. A Rosary service will precede the Mass at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West. Visitation with the family will be from 6 – 8 pm, Tuesday, November 29 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Josephine Jo was born on March 17, 1914, in Tours, TX to Mary and John Smajstrla, the fifth of their eleven children. She graduated from West High School in West, TX. While working for Texas Power & Light in West, she met and then married Frank M. Maddox, Jr. on October 6, 1940 and they made their home in Waco. During her life, she was a wonderful homemaker, a successful Avon representative and a talented and caring Teacher’s Aide for the Waco Independent School District. She was also a member of St. Martha’s Circle at St. Louis Catholic Church. Jo had an undying love for her family and friends and a beautiful smile for all. She had a great sense of humor and a creative mind, she was a wonderful cook, and she loved to dance. This special, remarkable lady is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Larry Deats of Richmond; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Carol Maddox of North Richland Hills; twin grandchildren, Brian Deats and Shannon Ferguson; grandson-in-law, Steve Ferguson; great-granddaughters, Jessie Grace and Ailie Josephine Ferguson; sisters, Rosalee Urbis and Adele Nemecek of West, Evelyn Cunningham of Elk, Jonnie Lou Yowell of Killeen and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and 3 brothers and 3 sisters. The family will always remember and be grateful to the staffs of Sugar Land Oaks and Houston Solari Hospice Care for their loving care and support of Jo.
