Julia B. Hollowell

JULIA B.HOLLOWELL Mrs. Julia B. Hollowell, age 92, died Friday, July 18, 2003 at a local nursing home. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22 at Oakwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd., with Dr. John A. Wood officiating. Mrs. Hollowell was born in Blum, Texas, in Hill County, on February 4, 1911, to Olivia Parham Pickle and Bradford Murphey Pickle. Her parents and grandparents were the children of the Confederacy who moved to Texas from Virginia and South Carolina after the Civil War. Mrs. Hollowell graduated from Newcastle High School with honors. She received an associate degree from San Antonio College and attended Trinity University. She married Manfred Theodore Moen in 1932. Mr. Moen died in 1939, the result of an automobile accident. On October 3, 1946 Mrs. Hollowell married Col. Herbert Hobson Hollowell Baylor University 1924, B.S. in San Antonio, Texas. They returned to Waco in 1949 where Col. Hollowell was deputy commander of Baylor Air Force R.O.T.C. Col. Hollowell died in May, 1967. Mrs. Hollowell worked for many years for the U.S. Civil Service Administration at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. She retired in 1980. Mrs. Hollowell was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, San Antonio, Texas. Presently she was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. She was devoted to her family and gloried in her three grandchildren. She was an avid reader and history buff. She enjoyed music, art collecting, and traveling. She was a devoted supporter of Billy Graham Crusades, Waco Caritas, and the Republican Party since 1940. She was a dog lover, her last dog being “Petie”, a white Poodle. Mrs. Hollowell was preceded in death by her brother, Parham B. Pickle and his wife Ethel, cousin Lois Smith Douglas Strain, and grandson Walter Robert Wooldridge, Jr. Survivors include her daughter, Jacquelyn Hollowell Wooldridge and son-in-law, Dr. Walter Robert Wooldridge; granddaughters, Cynthia Elaine Wooldridge Mattson and husband Brent Alan Mattson, Robin Leah Wooldridge Vasek and husband Dr. Joseph Austin Vasek; and great grandchildren, Austin Cole Vasek and Taylor Elaine Vasek. Pallbearers will be Brent Alan Mattson, Dr. J. Austin Vasek, Bertram E. King, Jr., Dan Mayfield, Jr., Jackson B. Burch, Cleveland Witt, Stanley Williams, George B. Graves, Jr., W. Earl Bracken, Jr., Fred Logan, Stephen H. Crump, Jr., Watson Arnold, Charles B. McGregor, John E. Goble, and J.D. Moulds. Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Henry Klatt Lynn, Dr. Patricia Ward Wallace, Mrs. Goodson McKee Pat, Mrs. John A. Wood Pat, Mrs. Robert Leggott Bobette, and Mrs. Norman Mullins Betty. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bond Browder, Dr. Darrell Slette, Dr. Ross Reagan, and the nursing staff at Ridgecrest Retirement Center for many years of loving care.
