Katherine ''Kay'' Mitchell Estes

ESTES, KATHERINE “KAY”MITCHELL Katherine “Kay” Mitchell Estes, age 81 died Thursday, March 7, 2002 at a Waco, Texas retirement residence. Services will be held at 11:30AM Monday, March 11 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd., Waco, TX with Dr. Milton Cunningham officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1:00PM Wednesday, March 13 at Marfa Cemetery, Marfa, Texas. Kay was born September 19, 1920 in Marfa to pioneer ranchers, Crawford Thomas and Mary Eliza “Mamie” Myers Mitchell. She attended Baylor University, where she helped form The Peer Club, later Delta Delta Delta. She received a B.S. Degree in 1942 and M.S. in 1948 and taught physical education at Central High School in Little Rock and at Baylor. After leaving the university in 1959, she ranched and taught in Junction, spending summers as a counselor at Camp Waldemar for Girls. She married Dr. Samuel James Estes in December 1973. A lifelong Baptist, Kay served on the Board of Directors of Paisano Baptist Encampment. Her parents, her husband, a sister and two brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include her sister, Lois Mitchell Thompson of Waco; stepdaughter, Sallie Estes Dubay of Maine; two step-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous great and great great nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Paisano Baptist Encampment, Box 973, Alpine, TX 79831, Baylor University or a charity of choice. WILKIRSON-HATCH-BAILEY
