Lane Edward Stecher February 1, 1926 - August 19, 2012 Lane Edward Stecher of Woodway passed away Sunday, August 19, 2012, at his home. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 23 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel. Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 22, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey. Lane was born February 1, 1926, in Cameron, Texas, to Antone Robert and Thresia Zeilsdorf Stecher. His mother passed away when he was 16 months old, and he was raised by his paternal grandmother, step-grandfather, and uncle. Lane was inducted into the Army on May 17, 1944, two weeks before graduation from Cameron Yoe High School. He trained at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and served as a PFC at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. He left the United States from Boston, Massachusetts, on the USS Westpoint on December 6, 1944, and arrived in Maroe, France, Dec. 15, 1944. Lane engaged in the Battle of the Rhine and the Battle of the Bulge under General Patch and General Patton and was wounded January 12, 1945, in Zuisweller, France. He spent 13 months in the hospital and was discharged February 5, 1946. Lane married Mary Lucile White on June 6, 1948, in Cameron. He was employed at the VA Regional office and later at the VA Medical Center, where he retired in 1989 with 41 years, 11 months with the Government. Lane held a life membership and was active in the Amvets, VFW, American Legion and the Purple Heart. He also volunteered many hours at the VA Hospital. He was a member of the Gurley Masonic Lodge. Even with his disability, he learned to square dance. He loved people and never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Florence Cykala and Verda Lee Cameron; brother, Robert Stecher; and half brother, Ernest Stecher.. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Stecher, Woodway; daughter, Deborah Gregory and husband, Steve, of Hewitt; son, Robert Lane Stecher and wife, Grace, of Pasadena, TX; grandchildren, Michael Stecher, and wife, Linda, and Shalee Collins and husband, Ryan; great grandchildren, Payton Kinser and Raylee Collins; four step-great grandchildren; one step-great great granchild; and many nieces and nephews.
