VANLANDINGHAM, LARRY DEAN Larry Dean Vanlandingham, PhD passed away at the age of 67 on Saturday morning, September 11, 2004 surrounded by the love of his family and many friends. Graveside services will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, September 14, at Oakwood Cemetery with Ed Wittner officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Monday, September 13, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Dr. Vanlandingham was born August 18, 1937 in Mexico, Missouri and then moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he began his life-long love of percussion. There, he earned a BA degree in music from Arizona State University. When he came to Waco and Baylor, he met Mary Zandi, his wife of 41 years. He served as Assistant Marching Band Director under Donald I. Moore, and earned his Masters of Music degree through Baylor. They moved to Florida, where he earned his PhD from Florida State, then returned to Waco. At Baylor, his talent and career flourished as the percussion professor for 41 years and consequently the head of the Instrumental Division of the School of Music. He was one of the charter members of the Waco Symphony Orchestra, was president of the International Percussive Arts Society, and in 1992 was named one of three outstanding professors at Baylor University. Upon his retirement, he was deemed Professor Emeritus. He was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. Many thanks to Dr. Charles Stern and all of his caregivers. He is survived by his wife, Mary Zandi Vanlandingham; son, Derek Vanlandingham of Dallas; daughter, Lara Tysinger and husband Alan; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Dylan all of San Antonio; sister, Wanda Owens and husband Charles of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces and nephews, and many friends who will remember and deeply miss his nurturing touch, his keen sense of humor, and his loving and generous spirit. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Percussive Arts Society, 701 NW Ferris Ave., Lawton, OK 73507-5442, and to the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic at Providence Hospital of Waco. Honorary pallbearers will be Towne Adams, Bill Haskett, Jim Lambert, Richard Shanley, Phil Van Duivendyk and Jerry Williamson.
