LaVerne Long Smith passed away peacefully December 4, 2016, at Providence Hospice Care in Waco, Texas. Services will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 8, at Waco Memorial Mausoleum Chapel. LaVerne was born in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Verne and Thelma Rodgers. At age ten, her family moved to Houston. She graduated from Lamar High School in Houston. She went to Southwestern University and was involved in Alpha Delta Pi sorority. In 1945 LaVerne married Jack Long. Later, in 1974, she married George Eugene Smith. She retired from American Income Life in 1989. LaVerne so deeply enjoyed volunteering and playing bridge at Harrison Senior Center for over fifteen years. She had many dear and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and her husband. She is survived by her son, Michael “Mickey” Long, and daughter-in-law, Sharon; granddaughters, Aimee Long of Waco, Sarah Long of Pasadena, California; and great granddaughter, Mimi. LaVerne was a pet lover. As she stated, “I’ve had several dogs and loved every one of them, but Suzie was my baby.” Memorials may be made to Harrison Senior Center, Waco.
