MICHAEL, LEORA Leora Michael, age 88, of Waco was called to heaven on Sunday, December 29, 2002 from a local nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30pm Thursday, January 2, 2003 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with Rev. Regina Easley-Young officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8pm Wednesday, January 1 at the funeral home. She was born December 3, 1914 in Crawford to William and Jessie Edwards Whitlock, one of nine brothers and sisters, who all preceded her in death. She was the only one of her family to graduate from high school and also attended North Texas State Women’s College in Denton. She married Gene Ervin Michael in Brownwood on December 31, 1936. He passed away on December 12th of this year and now she has joined him in time for their 66th wedding anniversary. Leora was a lover of poetry and music and was a longtime member of the choir at Highland Baptist Church in Waco. She was an avid crossword puzzle worker and a fabulous baker of cakes and pies. God gave her the gift of mercy and kindness to the lonely and needy, particularly toward the very young and the very old. Leora worked for many years babysitting for working parents. She had a special gift for this, so in a way she was a “mother of many”. Survivors include daughters, Marsha Bowman and husband, Vic and Janet Herbelin and husband, Ron; grandchildren, Blake, Chris, and Mike Bowman, Brenda Scott, Susan Mitchell and Jeff Herbelin, 13 great grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.
