Lois Mitchell Newton Thompson, 92, passed away May 11, 2005 in Eldorado, Texas. Graveside services will be at 1:30 PM, Tuesday, May 17 in Oakwood Cemetery with Dr. Milton Cunningham officiating. Lois was born September 21, 1912 in Marfa, Texas to Crawford Thomas and Mary Eliza “Mamie” Mitchell who were pioneer ranchers in Presidio County. She graduated from Marfa High School and attended Baylor University. Her family was one of several ranching families who were instrumental in founding the Paisano Baptist Encampment in the early 1900’s. What began as a small cowboy camp meeting, has grown into a highly anticipated annual Christian gathering that has continued to bring generations of families together. In 1933, she married William “Bill” Newton at her parents home in Marfa. They lived in Waco where they reared their two children. Bill passed away May 22, 1956. On August 11, 1962, Lois and Colonel Rex Monroe Thompson were married. They were stationed in California before retiring to San Angelo, Texas where they resided from 1970 to 1986 when Colonel Thompson passed away on August 22. Mrs. Thompson moved to Ridgecrest Retirement Center in Waco where she lived for eighteen years. In July of 2004, she moved to Eldorado to live with her daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Pam Newton White of Eldorado and her son, Mitchell Newton of Salem, Oregon; grandchildren, Mary Kay White of Lavernia, Texas, Missy White Sims and husband, Wayne of Aledo, Texas, Mitchell Newton, Jr. of Oregon and Michelle dos Santos of Australia and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by stepchildren, Rex Thompson, Jr., David Thompson and Bonnie Turner all of California.
