Lucy Mejia

Lucy Mejia, 96, passed away January 26, 2018, in Waco, Texas. Services will be on 10:00 a.m., February 1, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Benjie Magnaye officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. A Rosary service will be held 6:00 p.m., January 31, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Visitation will follow the Rosary. Lucy was born in Asa, Texas, on November 7, 1921, and spent her childhood on the farm. She was taught at a young age a tremendous work ethic and to follow her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She moved to Waco as a young girl, where she met and married Pete M. Mejia of Waco, on March 20, 1944. They were happily married for 57 years. In addition to being a homemaker, she was also seamstress for over 28 years. Lucy spent countless hours volunteering at her church, Sacred Heart, and also volunteered her time to charitable organizations such as Caritas, The Ladies of Charity and the Guadalupanas. Whether it was sewing or cooking, her interests and hobbies were always centered around a common theme, serving others in need or fundraising efforts to support Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Lucy is preceded in death by her parents, Crispin and Ramona Ortiz Herrera; husband Pete M. Mejia; son, Pete R. Mejia; sister, Nellie Cheek; and brothers, Frank Herrera and Ralph Herrera She is survived by her sisters, Lena Valverde of Waco, Maria Martinez of Los Angeles, California, Beatrice Willis and husband, Mike, of Waldo, Wisconsin, and Rachel Soto and husband, Joe, of Temple, Texas; brothers, Antonio Herrera and wife, Gloria, of Dallas, Alfredo Herrera of Elgin, Illinois, and Arturo Herrera of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Connie Mejia of Waco; brother-in-law, James Cheek of Garland, Texas; sister-in-law, Lupe Herrera of Temple; two grandchildren, Pete C. and Kelly Mejia; and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be James Herrera, Michael Herrera, Christopher Herrera, Andy Mejia, Josh Ridings and Tim McAdoo. Honorary pallbearer will be Marcos Magana. Lucy was a devout Catholic and loved her church. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waco.
