Lura Mckamie

Lura McKamie April 21, 1925 - September 14, 2009 Lura McKamie of Waco passed away Monday, September 14, 2009. Services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 18, at Richfield Christian Church with Rev. David Story officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, September 17, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Garden Room. Lura was born April 21, 1925, in Elgin, Texas, to Milton and Pearl Snowden. She and Ed McKamie were married in Waco on May 20, 1949, and were married for 57 years. She flourished in her roles of wife and mother, and as a counselor and leader to her extended family. Lura studied voice at TCU, where she was judged to have "perfect pitch". She displayed her musical talents regularly throughout her life as a choir member, soloist and featured singer. Lura and Ed had been longtime members of Richfield Christian Church in Waco. Lura was active in state and local PTA organizations for many years, serving as local president and achieving PTA Life Membership. An accomplished national and international traveler, she loved nature and was especially fond of songbirds. In retirement, she and Ed spent several vacations exploring U.S. national parks. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband; her parents; brothers, Claude and Bob Snowden; and sisters, Eleanor, Midge, Nynn and Charlie. She is survived by her sons, Mick McKamie and wife, Diane; and David McKamie; grandchildren, Misty Spears and husband, Adrian; Zack McKamie and wife, Laura; Kyle McKamie and Allison McKamie; sisters-in-law, Virginia Snowden, Eloise Holder and Wilma Martin; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
