Mae Bergstrom Burt May 25, 1907 – January 20, 2006 Mae Bergstrom Burt, 98, passed away January 20, 2006 at Hillcrest Hospital. Graveside services will be Monday, January 23, at 9:30 am at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 pm Sunday, January 22, at Wilkirson Hatch Bailey. Mae was the third youngest of ten children of Ellen and John Louis Bergstrom. She graduated from Waco High School as valedictorian of her class at the age of sixteen. At Baylor University she was a member of the National Honor Society. She did post-graduate work at the University of Madrid Spain. Mae and Lawrence Burt were married in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1977. She was an ardent grower of iris and organized the Waco Iris Society. While living in Robinson, TX for 50 years with her husband Lawrence on their dairy farm, her acres of irises were the locale of many pilgrimages of iris lovers. She moved more than 700 iris varieties when she moved to her home in Waco. She was a Master Judge of the American Iris Society and a Master Judge Emeritus of the National Council of Flower Show Judges. She was a charter member of Central United Methodist Church. She is survived by her niece Ellen Nafus Singleton and husband Ron; nephew Jim Nafus and wife Monta; nephew John Louis Bergstrom III and wife Lou; nephew Paul Bergstrom and wife Carla; and many great nieces and great nephews. The family request that any memorial contributions be made to the Waco Iris Society or to Central United Methodist Church.
