Maenette Jeanes

JEANES, MAENETTE Maenette Olsen Jeanes, 100 of Waco, died quietly Monday morning, February 14, 2005 at a local nursing home. Graveside services will be at 11am Friday, February 18 at Rosemound Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Wible officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8 pm Thursday, February 17 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Born March 13, 1904, in Clifton, Texas, Maenette was the only child of Cara Mitchell and Martin George Olsen. By 1916 her family had moved to Waco, and in 1922 she graduated from Waco High School with honors. At Baylor University, she earned the Bachelor of Arts 1925 and Masters of Science 1955 degrees. Additional graduate courses in business were taken at Columbia University in New York City and the University of Texas at Austin. From 1926-28, Maenette was registrar at the American University in Washington, DC. She married Wacoan Perry Kenneth Jeanes, a career naval officer, aboard the battleship USS Idaho in 1928. Two sons were born in Long Beach, California and the family returned to Waco in the early forties. Initially Maenette worked at the war-time McLennan County Health Unit and then in 1944 joined the Waco Independent School District. During the next 25 years she taught at North Junior and Waco High schools, retiring as chairperson of the business department at Richfield High School. After retirement, she taught in the business departments at Baylor University, Texas State Technical Institute, and McLennan County Community College. Maenette served as president of the Waco-McLennan County Retired Teachers Association and Alpha Delta Kappa honorary business fraternity, was charter member and state treasurer of Texas Business Education Association, board secretary at the Stilwell Memorial Residence, and member of Highland Baptist Church, as well as, the American Association of University Women. Survivors include son, William Jeanes and wife Jeanette of Brooklyn, New York and granddaughter, Sheree Jeanes of Huntington Station, Long Island.
