Mardell Armstrong

Mardell Armstrong, 91, passed away Friday, August 19, 2005 at a local nursing home. Graveside services will be at 9:30am, Tuesday, August 23 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Tom Robbins and Rev. Art Torpy officiating. Visitation with family will be held from 6-8pm, Monday, August 22 at the Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Mardell was born May 29, 1914 in Clifton, Texas to Newman Thomas Wallace and Agnes Mildred Johnson. In 1923, she moved with her family to Waco where she attended Waco Public Schools, graduating from Waco High School in 1932. She attended Four-C Commercial College and Baylor University. In 1937, she married Robert D. Armstrong, a local jeweler and owner of Armstrong’s Jewelry. He preceded her in death in 1974. She was active in volunteer community social service agencies. She worked with the United Way, YWCA, Evangelia Home for Children. She was one of the founders of the Latin American Christian Center kindergarten and day care where she served on the board for forty years. She was an active member of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church for seventy five years. She served as the Sunday School teacher of the Hartsfield Class and served as president of the United Methodist Women. She is survived by sister, Kathryn Wallace Virgin of Garland; nieces, Kathy Lou Virgin of Garland, Valenda Kay Archer and husband Jim of Richardson; great nieces, Lisa Coppinger and husband, Jim of Plano and Mary Kathryn Kate Kirby and husband, Andrew of Cal.; twin great-great nephews, Michael and Christopher Coppinger of Plano. Appreciation is expressed to Wilton and Lee Lanning, “loving and helpful neighbors for 30 years”.
