Margaret D. Hunter

Margaret Dahse Hunter passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2021, in Waco, Texas. A celebration of her life will be held at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home on Friday, July 23 at 11 am. Visitation will follow the service. Margaret and her twin sister, Jean, were born in Austin on October 19, 1925, to Emma Mansfield and Eric Herman Dahse. When the twins were five years old the family moved to Waco. Margaret would live the rest of her life there, with the exception of two and a half years in California and Corpus Christi while her husband served in the Navy. Margaret attended Waco schools, graduating from Waco High School in 1942. She graduated from Baylor University in December 1945. While at Baylor, Margaret was a Delta Alpha Pi, which later became Kappa Alpha Theta. She and Jean were Baylor Beauties. In March of 1946, Margaret married Walter D. Hunter, Jr. (Tootie), and they had two daughters, Carol and Lynn. Margaret and Tootie celebrated their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary shortly before Tootie passed away. Margaret was a gracious hostess, professional volunteer, and an avid bridge and Mah-Jongg player. She was involved in Camp Fire Girls, Dental Auxiliary, Historic Waco Foundation and for several years ran the Tea Room at Fort House, making thousands of crepes for the Tearoom patrons to enjoy. She was a member of Lake Shore Baptist Church and later, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She spent her last three years living at the Delaney at Lake Waco, still playing bridge and Mah-Jongg. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. Walter D. “Tootie” Hunter; and her sister, Jean Babel. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Wells and husband Bob, and Lynn Carter and husband Gary; her grandchildren Steve Wells and wife Missy, Melissa Wells, Matthew Wells, Kelli Nokes and husband Callan, and Kacie Angell and husband John; her great-grandchildren, Melodi Wells, Rachel Lawrence and husband Blake, Ben Wells, Joshua Wells, Luke Wells, and Maggie Kae Wells, Carter Nokes, and Hunter Nokes and her great-great-grandchildren, Devin Shelton, Kaylee Janke, Everett Janke, and Fischer Lawrence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Waco Founder Lions Foundation Kiddieland Park or the charity of your choice.
