Margrette A. Carter November 21, 1910 - February 8, 2003 Margrette Ann Baker Carter of Waco and Austin—loving mother, faithful wife, devoted grandmother, devout Christian, perennial Democrat, good citizen—passed away in the early hours of Saturday, February 8, 2003. Ever optimistic, hopeful, frugal, strong willed, un-yielding to tribulations, well groomed—she persevered through world wars, Great Depression, deaths, bridge and golf to age 92, all with keen intellect, many smiles, infrequent tears, few complaints. She almost did what she oft expressed as her wish to “Live to a hundred and one, then be turned out to pasture like the ole’ gray mare.” Born Annie Margrette Baker to Alexander and Ludie Baker in Oglesby, Texas, sister to two brothers Clyde and Vance, married to O. Dan Carter of Mt. Calm, Texas, she mothered only child Thomas D., now of Austin. Cherished grand children are Tommy Dan Carter San Rafael, CA, Sheree Howard Rome,GA; beloved great-grandchild is Dominique S. Nikki Carter Novato, CA. Baptized age 9 in the Methodist Church, she remained a devout Christian and acolyte in her churches. Margrette, Mama Margret and Mother, as she was called by her family and friends, was active in life. School honors were High School Queen, lead role in senior play, high academic rank, degree from 4C College Waco and Beauty School cosmetology Certificate. Work experiences included homemaker, farmer’s wife, supporter of husband’s professional career, secretary for insurance companies and tax offices, substitute teacher and library clerk. Church participation encompassed memberships in Methodist churches of Oglesby, Hillsboro, Brandon, Taft, Navasota, Freeport and Woodway, Texas, including also the Women’s Society of Christian Services WSCS both local and district offices. Social clubs and organizations were Book Clubs, Music Study Groups, Home Demonstration Station Club, Presidents of PTAs, Girl Scout Leader, and Women’s Golf Association of Navasota. Retiring in 1965, she continued her family activities while actively pursuing the games of golf and bridge. She supported her husband’s work as it progressed from 1930 to retirement in 1973: truck driver and farmer in Oglesby, college student at Baylor University, school teacher/coach/administrator of public schools in Lovelace, Brandon, Taft, Navasota and Freeport, Texas. Following retirement, they first resided in Navasota and then relocated to Waco, Texas. After the death of her husband, she remained in Waco until 1998 when she moved to Austin, where she remained until death. Services are slated for Austin and Waco, Texas: Memorial in Austin, Thursday, 13th, 10:30 AM, Summit Northwest Hills Retirement Center, 5715 Mesa Drive. Visitation in Waco Thursday 13th, 5-7 PM Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, Bosque Boulevard. Funeral in Waco Friday 14th, 10 AM , Woodway 1st United Methodist Church Rev. Dr. James Smith presiding. Burial in Waco Memorial Park, I-35 S. Pall Bearers will be Mike Mansfield, Ben Ware and John Hemenway of Waco, Joe Poteet of Navasota, James Balke of Bleblerville and David Baker of Ft. Worth. Flowers to funeral home. Donations to charity of choice. We bid you a fond farewell Mother, Mama Margret, Margrette. Though you’ve gone from this world, we’ll remember you fondly. If you look, you’ll see us smiling as we think of you in heaven.
