BAIRD, MARILEE Marilee Baird, 97 of Waco, died Monday, July 26, 2004 peacefully. Graveside services will be at 11:30am Friday, July 30 at Oakwood Cemetery, 2125 S. 5th St. with the Rev. Danny Tenney officiating. Marilee Baird was born November 23, 1906 in Denison. Her family moved to Waco in 1918 because her father was appointed to be the General Secretary of the Waco Y.M.C.A. Her mother died during the flu epidemic in 1925. Maril had three brothers: Victor, William and Robert, and two sisters: Helen and Virginia. Marilee attended Brook Avenue School to the sixth grade, West Junior and graduated from Waco High in 1924. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Baylor University. After graduation from Baylor she was elected to the fourth grade teaching place at Brook Avenue School for several years. Next, she was appointed to be the principal of the Alta Vista Elementary School for four years. Then, Crestview Elementary School was built in 1952 on New Road. She was the first principal, and was there for 24 years. It was in 1976 that her brother fell and broke his back. So he had to retire to take care of him. He died in 1992. Marilee had made her home at 615 Herring Ave. until 2003 when she moved to the Regent Care Center in Waco and then San Antonio to be near her sister, Virginia. Marilee was a member of the Delta Kappa Society-Zeta, Societe de Beaux Arts Club; Waco McLennan County Retired Teachers Association and Austin Avenue United Methodist Church.
