Martha Jane McKethan Maddux Smith passed away on August 24, 2017 at the age of 86. Graveside services will be at Harris Creek Cemetery on Tuesday, August 29 at 11:30 a.m. with Dr. John Collier of Parkview Baptist officiating. Visitation with the family will be at Crossroads Fellowship Church (next to the cemetery) 1861 Church Rd. McGregor, Texas from 10:00 – 11:30 prior to the service. Martha was born to Buster and Christine McKethan on April 9, 1931 in South Bosque. She was a country girl with four wonderful, loving, and caring sisters with a Christian mother and loving father. Martha was the oldest and sometimes “too motherly” figure for her sisters. Martha graduated from Baylor with her Master’s degree in Education and Administration. She married J.W. (Red) Maddux in 1950. Their son, H.G. (Butch) Maddux was born in 1953. She married Norman (Red) Smith in 1981 after both of their first spouses had been taken home by the Lord. Martha was a long-time educator. She taught at Speegleville ISD, Lorena ISD, and held the positions of teacher, Principal and Assistant Superintendent at La Vega ISD from 1955 until 1992. Her favorite role was that of “Honey” to her grandson, Brandon. Brandon has many special memories of times spent with his Honey and Granddaddy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pappa (Buster) (1958) and Christine McKethan (2006), her first husband, James William (Red) Maddux (1978) and sister, Nancy McKethan Robinson Day (2014). She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Norman (Red Smith); son, H.G. (Butch) Maddux and wife, Pam from Waco; grandson, Brandon James Maddux and wife, Kristin and new love of her life, great granddaughter, Madeline Grace Maddux (all of Friendswood, TX); and stepdaughter, Shelley Smith Malone and her husband, Patrick of Fort Worth. Also, by her sisters, Flo Judd of Duncanville, TX, Sue Lipscomb of Woodway, TX, and Cynthia Wittenburg of Waco, TX, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who have blessed her life. Special friends and extended family: Bob & Gail McNairy, Angie Rawls, Pam Long, Jack James, and Joe Johnson. She also had a special place in her heart for pastors Mike Toby, Roy Marshall, Robert Buchanan, and Dr. John Collier. Pallbearers will be Bill Dosher, Dan Henderson, John Pavelka, Woodrow Logan, Carlous Stone, Bryant Adams, George Dixon, and Mike Reitmeier. The family is thankful to Bluebonnet Hospice, Lucy’s Loving Home Care, the staff at Royal Manor II, Dr. Ed Cooney, and Dr. Sandra Kitson for the outstanding compassionate care given to our “Honey.” The family invites you to leave a memory or message on our “Tribute Wall” at www.WHBfamily.com. Mom would want all to know that God orchestrates our lives from birth to earthly death and that a relationship with God through Jesus Christ assures abundant living and eternal life in heaven. Our family was, is, and will be blessed.
