Marvin Rhea Lands

Lands, Marvin Marvin Rhea Lands, 70, passed away Monday, July 11, at a local hospital. Services will be Thursday, July 14 at 1:30 PM at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Larry Eoff officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, July 13 from 6 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home, 6101 Bosque. Mr. Lands was born January 3, 1935 in the community of Hewitt to Frank Marvin and Carrie Belle Maddux Lands. As a young child, he also lived in Weir, Texas and Wichita, Kansas. Returning to Hewitt, he attended the Hewitt, South Bosque and Midway schools. He played football for Midway and was offered a football scholarship to Cisco Junior College; he chose, however to enter the Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. In 1956, he was detailed to Manila in the Philippine Islands in Headquarters Company. He was discharged in October of 1956 and returned to his family farm in Hewitt where he entered the dairy profession. In August of 1957, he married Shirlene Sylvia Saffle of Waco. After seven years in the dairy business, he was employed as an auto mechanic with Midway Automotive for four or five years. He worked at A.O. Smith Bomb Plant for three or four years. Afterwards, he entered the oil wholesale business and operated Skelly Oil. In 1972, after selling the company he became employed by PowerAm Oil Company. In 1980, he went to work for the McLennan County Sheriff’s Department. He served as a Deputy Sheriff and court bailiff for the 54th District Court. After seven years, he transferred to the Constable’s Office as a deputy constable where he served until his retirement until April 1995. He was Hewitt Fire Chief from 1970 to 1975 and served as a city councilman, mayor pro-temp and mayor of Hewitt from 1974 to 1979. His hobbies were fishing, camping and traveling. He also obtained his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying for several years. He pursued his current hobby of woodworking after retirement. He was member of the Cotton Palace Good Sam RV Chapter. He is survived by his wife, Shirlene Lands; sons, Marvin Ray Lands, Kyle Lands and wife Michele and granddaughter Erica; daughter, Charlette Renee Threadgill and husband, Brian and granddaughter Phylicia; numerous nieces, and nephews including Taylor Kate Charette. Pallbearers will be Curtis McLemore, Charlie Maddux, Mike Adams, Howard Denard, Perry Smith, B.J. Smith, James Parker and Steve Bounds. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Shipley Donut Coffee Club at Crossroads West. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cotton Palace Good Sams RV Chapter, PO Box 133, Hewitt, Texas 76643.
