Mary Dees McDermott Hicks Mary D.M. Hicks of Waco, Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas, and La Veta, Colorado, was born and raised in Waco, Texas, on September 1, 1924, and died at the age of 78 Colorado Springs, Colorado on January 22, 2003. She lived most of her life in Waco, returning there as a permanent resident in 1970, although she spent considerable time in Colorado as well, where she maintained a summer residence. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Benjamin Littlejohn of Waco, Texas, and Major Herbert Leon Hicks, of La Veta, Colorado and Corpus Christi, Texas. Mrs. Hicks was an artist, working primarily in oils and watercolors. She was also a patron of fine art and music for most of her life. She is survived by her two daughters, H. Leslie Hicks of La Veta, Colorado, and Lisa Collins of Grand Junction, Colorado; one grandson, Caleb Collins of Austin, Texas, and a cousin, Jack Brown of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Arrangements are being handled by the Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, January 27, at the Oakwood Cemetery, 2124 S. Fifth St., Waco, Texas. Presiding over the service will be Pastor Larry Booth. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in the memory of Mary Dees McDermott Hicks to the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts, PO Box 663, La Veta, CO 81055.
