Mary Louise Cox

Mary Louise Cox, 79, passed away Monday, July 31, 2023 at Providence Hospice Place in Waco.


The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 7, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home with Richard Gato and David Ives officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 6 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. Guests are invited and encouraged to wear purple in honor of Mary.


Mary was born March 9, 1944 in Waco. She attended Waco High School and graduated in 1962. She married James Cox, her high school sweetheart, on March 15, 1963 with whom she had two beautiful daughters, Lisa Victoria and Christi Louise. She was employed at Lone Star Gas Company and then became a homemaker when the children were born. As life-long devout Christians, they pastored and served at Church On The Rock Bellmead and a number of other churches in the Waco area for over 40 years. Mary’s passion was singing and leading worship in the church. She also taught bible class at Ridgecrest Retirement Center for over 17 years. Mary thought of laughter as “medicine for the soul” and always loved to laugh and have fun with those around her. She especially loved becoming a grandmother and enjoyed knowing and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Alma Massman; many beloved aunts and uncles; and some of her best friends.

Survivors include her husband, James Cox; her brother, Ronald Clinton Massman, Sr. and wife, Linda Massman; her daughters, Lisa Jaska and husband, Bryan Jaska, Christi Hunting Horse and husband, TJ Hunting Horse; her grandchildren, Donovan Moorefield and wife, Marissa Moorefield and Hanna Hunting Horse; and her great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Lawson Moorefield. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and her extended church family whom she loved dearly.


Pallbearers will be Bryan Jaska, Clint Massman, Donovan Moorefield, Hanna Hunting Horse, James Rodgers and Matt Rodgers.


Memorials may be made to Community Health Care of Texas, 6700 Sanger Ave, Waco TX 76710 for their compassionate care during Mary’s final days.
