ARNOLD, MARY REBECCA MARY BECK MAXWELL Mary Rebecca Mary Beck Maxwell Arnold, age 81 of Waco died Monday, November 11, 2002 at a local nursing home. Services will be held at 10am Friday, November 15 at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Dr. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Harris Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are through Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. Mrs. Arnold was born on November 29, 1920 to Mary McCauley and Forest O. Maxwell in Waco. She graduated from Waco High School in 1937 and attended Baylor University where she received her B.A. Degree in 1941, majoring in English, Art and Education. While at Baylor, she was President of the Alpha Omega Club, which later became the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and she was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. She was on the Executive Board of the First Families of Baylor and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She received her Master’s Degree in 1942 and taught at Baylor for more that ten years as Assistant Professor in the English Department. On September 19, 1942, she married Watson Caufield Arnold, a Waco attorney. Mrs. Arnold became very active in civic affairs. She was President of the Board of Directors of the Hamilton House, a charter member of the Heritage Society, a charter member of the Fort House Board, a charter member of Garden Forum, and served on the Y.W.C.A. Executive Board. She was appointed to membership in the Baylor Founder’s Club. In 1960, Mr. Arnold was appointed Assistant Attorney General of Texas, and the family moved to Austin. Continuing to serve her community while in Austin, Mrs. Arnold was appointed a Docent at the Governor’s Mansion, and she served as a member of the Austin Settlement Club. The Arnold family moved back to Waco in 1993. After returning to Waco, Mrs. Arnold served on the Executive Board of the Helen Marie Taylor Museum, became a lifetime member of the Brazos Forum, and was a member of the Waco Symphony Council. She was listed in the book, Notable Women of Texas, First Edition, 1984-85. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Watson Caufield Arnold; sons, Dr. Watson C. Arnold, Jr. and wife, Tricia of Fort Worth, William McCauley Arnold and wife, Karen of Clifton, Virginia, Patrick M. Arnold and wife, Eileen of Dallas, Henry M. Arnold and wife, Suzy of Dallas; nine grandchildren, Thomas, Phillip, Margaret, William, Katherine, Rebecca, Patrick, Allison, and Andrew Arnold. Pallbearers will be John Hawes, Edgar Jablonowski, Robert McHaney, Davis Metz, Pat Pattillo, and Dudley Fowler. Honorary pallbearers are Spencer Brown, Cavitt Caufield, Lacy Clifton, Jesse Milam, Eb Morrow, Gordon Rountree, Harry Trippet, James Warner, and Earl DeLay.
