Mattie Ellen Lewis

LEWIS, MATTIE Mattie E. Lewis, age 94, of Waco died Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at a local hospital. Services will be 9:30 AM Friday, June 8th at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 1124 Washington Ave. with Rev. Jimmie Spann officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, June 7th at the funeral home. Mrs. Lewis was born April 22, 1907 near Rogers. She was next to the youngest of nine children born to Charles L. and Mary Bean Gibson. She was reared and educated in Rogers and graduated from Rogers High School in 1925. She married James Sparks Lewis in 1926. They lived on the Lewis farm until 1941. They moved to San Diego, CA and lived there during WWII. In 1947 they moved back to Texas and then to Waco later that year. Mr. Lewis preceded her in death October 4, 1990. Mrs. Lewis was reared in a Christian home as a Methodist. In 1949, she joined Chalk Bluff Baptist Church and was presently a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Waco. Survivors include: Daughter: Barbara Schmid and husband, Hubert of Robinson Son: Jim Lewis and wife, Betty of Little River Five grandchildren Three great grandchildren Two great great grandchildren Sister-in-law: Evalie Lewis of Waco Several nieces and nephews Pallbearers will be David Lewis, Wayne Corley, Steve Schmid, Jim Beam, Hubert Schmid and Bob Stewart. Honorary pallbearers are Harold Lewis and Deacons of Memorial Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, Providence Hospice or favorite charity. WILKIRSON-HATCH-BAILEY
