WILLIAMS, MAURINE ELIZABETH Maurine Elizabeth Williams, age 90, of Waco died early Thursday, April 15, 2004 at a local nursing home where she had lived for the last two months. Graveside services will be held at 2pm Saturday, April 17 at Waco Memorial North with Rev. Drew Wilson officiating. Family and friends are invited for visitation at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey from 6-8pm Friday, April 16. Mrs. Williams was born in Jones Prairie, Milam County, Texas September 5, 1913 to William James and Mary Estelle Bailey Hammond. Jones Prairie is a community established on the league of land Mrs. Williams’ great great great grandfather Joseph Patterson Jones purchased in 1834. Many other early Texans are her ancestors. Her siblings were Williams James Hammond Jr., Mary Frances Hammond Doughty, John Edward Hammond, Virginia Dale Hammond Gibson, Roy Laverne Hammond and Barbara June Hammond Rieger, her only surviving sibling. Mrs. Williams attended school at Powers Chapel School, Briary School and Rosebud High School in Rosebud, Texas. On June 14, 1933 she and Orange Durwood Williams Jr. were married in Travis, Falls County, Texas. Mr. Williams died in 1958 in Waco. After his death Maurine began working outside her home for the first time. Being an expert seamstress she went to work at fabric stores as a salesperson, these include Comal Cottons, The Singer Company and Cloth World. She retired from The Singer Company after 20 years of service and Cloth Worth after many years there. Mrs. Williams has been a member of Park Lake Drive Baptist Church where she served the Lord in many capacities including teaching Sunday school to many different age groups. Her church was the center of her life until she suffered a severe stroke in 1996. Since that time she stayed active in the church services and Bible studies provided by Ridgecrest Retirement Center and Alterra Sterling House Retirement Center. Mrs. Williams is survived by daughter, Sylvia Doris Williams Grisham and husband, James of Waco; sons, Charles Ray Williams and wife, Jeanne of Waco and Durwood Williams and wife, Jackie of Harris Creek, and James David Williams and wife, Deborah of Irving; grandchildren, Michael Charles Williams, Barry Craig Williams, James Ray Grisham, III, Kyle Gene Grisham, Patricia Ann Grisham Brown, Melissa Kay Grisham Landrum, Kimberly Ann Williams all of Waco and Brian Durwood Williams of England; sister, Barbara June Rieger and husband, Gerald of Bryan, sister-in-law, Mary Frances Hammond of Groves, brother-in-law, Harold Vernon Gibson of Waco and 17 great grandchildren. Many other loving nieces and nephews will remember happy memories with their Aunt “Sis”. The family would like to express their appreciation of Dr. Richard Jackson for many years of care and the staffs of Ridgecrest Retirement Center and Alterra Sterling House for their tender loving care.
